Little Guitars: A Tribute to Van Halen is the Van Halen tribute album. It totally bypasses the Sammy Hagar/Gary Cherone periods, focusing instead on the original lineup.

Scroll down the page & find a little surprise;

Light Up The Sky
Vocals: Doug Pinnick (Kings X)
Guitars: Yngwie Malmsteen
Bass: Billy Sheehan (David Lee Roth)
Drums: Vinnie Colaiuta

I've heard that track. It's not possible to top the original. Alex's groove-esque solo grooves so hard. It's an unstoppable projectile hitting a unmovable object. It owns you.

Are you kidding me? Vinnie blows Alex away on that track. He brought the groove up to the next level. Not to mention those single strokes on the kick...

Caution: personal opin ahead [opins are like you-know-whats... ] While I DO like the remake w VC [& like StvH, he is 1 of, if not my fav, drummers] - i'm gonna have to go w Holmes on this 1.
The playing on the remake is indeed VERY good [of course]; but how're you gonna top the orig? I mean, it's the guys [VH] who 1st originally wrote, performed, & recorded it, for Petes' sake...this sheer fact alone makes it almost irrelevant - altho Van Halen's remake of the Kinks "You Really Got Me" FAR surpasses the orig ]...sometimes the original's can be matched; but seldom topped; it's kinda hard for any1 to cop VH, since they had such a unique, distinctive, identifiable, & undeniable sound & feel in that band [as well as the interplay between the 2 brothers, & with MAnthony, & DLR's distinctive vox]...of course, if you're gonna look at it from strictly a technical &/or chops standpoint, VC is a much better drummer [as far as it goes DRUMMISTICALLY, technically speaking]...but there was a certain magic to VH - that raw energy & vibe, that monsterous sound, & man, they SWUNG [& grooved] some of that stuff in a rock veign; even if it wasn't necessarily "click-perfect" ALL the time, it still felt good...just MHO...& - if you don't like it, tuff [addendum, a' la' TBo & Nikk ]....

Is there anything that Vinnie played on that isn't better than the original?

Just kidding, I don't understand that thinking. Vinnie's good, but I don't hear any Van Halen "garlic" in his playing.

Van Halen II is one of my favorite recordings, AVH is killing all over that. And he's as creative as Vinnie is, the sound, the groove, the beats, the huge kits, the solid fills, his contributions to live playing.

A true monster.

Just because Vinnie is Vinnie doesn't particularly mean that everything he plays is better than every other recorded drum performance. Vinnie even talks about how some of Ringo's tracks are perfect and how HE nor anyone else could play better than what is on those originals. Even though we all know there is no comparison between the Vinnie and Ringo technique-wise even Vinnie admits that he couldn't top the performance on those tracks. Just because someone is a better technician doesn't mean they are a better musician. If people go around with the assumption that technique will automatically make you a better musician or make you more musical, well, they have completely missed the point. It is a cliche but technique is only a means to an end. Thomas Lang said he practices technique so much because he hates it. He practices it so he can get it out of the way so he can play MUSIC. Reading the earlier response just kind of got me going a little bit. Just because someone has more technique and is more accomplished on their instrument doesn't always make what they play the sh*t. Individuality, soul... that means more than speed and polyrhythms. If one has a musical soul then technique will let one manifest that. I think too many people lose sight of that and tend to think of it conversely. Vinnie is such a great player because he has something to say on his instrument and has the vocabulary to say it. Many other drummers who have comparable technique just "ramble" instead of saying something because they have alot of words to use but haven't put time into thinking about what they want to say. And speaking of rambling, that is what i am doing now! Hey, AVH had attitude on the drums and that goes a long way! I just read that one post by "lovedrum" and had to respond. Vinnie may be a better drummer but it doesn't mean others can't occasionally make a more meaningful musical statement. I think Vinnie would agree.

Cool

"Just because someone is a better technician doesn't mean they are a better musician. If people go around with the assumption that technique will automatically make you a better musician or make you more musical, well, they have completely missed the point"

Hmmm, not get get somethin' started, but I don't believe anybody said the above. I think you made an assumption based on some general categories: Technique ='s Better Drummer. In this forum, those categories are too general. Many forums can't get past this narrow viewpoint. Review the many Dave-Vinnie show down posts of times past.

I also agree on the VH II comment. I have always felf that recording was great and underrated. Alex is way underrated...rarely do I hear him quoted as an influence, but he laid it down most excellently...sunglasses and all!

It wasn't that someone said outright that technique=better musicianship but it seems to me that a commonly held point of view by many drummers is that technique is the end all. It sounded as if the comment i was referring to was coming from this point of view. Sometimes drummers who possess less technique than others are automatically thought of as lesser, or when performances are compared, their performance is thought of as lesser. I just didn't want that to be the case here. That being said Vinnie, of course, is the man and Alex IS way underrated, for sure.
Good Times!
